Parenting is beyond giving our kids food and sending them to school. Apparently, the most challenging part is guiding our kids learn to practice the values and lessons that will help them grow into happy adults as well as to be loved by people around them.
Here are a few things we might want to teach our kids:
Teach them to grow in faith.
Teach them to value relationships — family, friends, everyone.
Teach them to respect. Guide them how to show it.
Let them use the magic words: “please”, “thank you”, and “excuse me”
Teach them to share (things, talents, time, love, etc).
Teach them to say sorry.
Teach them how to forgive and let go of grudges.
Teach them to assert themselves without being arrogant.
Teach them kindness. It does not cost anything to share it.
Teach them to save money for their future. Get them started at a young age.
Take care of nature and the earth.
Take a bath, brush their teeth, and be clean.
Take care of their health and their bodies.
Teach them how to make eye contact, give proper handshakes, and carry good conversation.
Show them how to live an active lifestyle.
Teach them how to prepare food.
Teach them to eat fruits and vegetables.
Show them how to look at the brighter side of things.
Encourage them to play, learn, and help each other.
Teach them how to tell the truth, even when they don’t want to.
Show them how to be brave. Encourage them to try new things.
Teach them that it’s okay to lose, to get frustrated or disappointed, to be sad or angry sometimes, as long as they don’t get stuck there.
Show them how to accept others for who they are.
Motivate them to persevere and to work towards their dreams.
Teach them to be sensitive to other people’s feelings.
Show them how to be compassionate.
Teach them when and how to say “no”.
Encourage their curiosity. Show them how to be observant, to read, and to ask questions. Welcome creativity and imagination.
Choosing between wants and needs can be a struggle. Help them make the right choices.
Teach them to play music.
Our children can learn these lessons from people around them, but probably, they are learned best when they are learned from parents, and are learned through examples.
